If you have an iMac and want to use it as a second monitor for your primary computer, you can do so using Duet Display. Duet is one of the most popular apps in the world for connecting your computers, allowing you to extend to another device, mirror your screen to share with someone, or Remote Desktop back home if you are away to access anything you need. Though this article is specifically about iMacs, Duet supports both Mac and PC, so you can use any of these devices interchangeably as a second display. Here's how to set it up:

  1. Download and install Duet on both your primary computer and your iMac. You can download Duet from the official website (https://www.duetdisplay.com/).
  2. Once Duet is installed on both computers, make sure to log into Duet with the same account, and sign up for Duet Air or Duet Pro
  3. Click the Desktop tab in Duet on your iMac, and once you see your computer, you can select Mirror or Extend
  4. You're connected! Now simply move your cursor to the edge of your primary display and it will automatically appear on the iMac. You can then drag windows and applications from your primary display to your iMac and vice versa.

If you are on a Mac and both computers are on macOS 12.3 or later, you can connect them using the official thunderbolt cable from Apple, allowing the display to work over the wire. The instructions are the same, but you will have to ensure they recognize each other over the Thunderbolt bridge. Check here for more instructions!

Using Duet to connect your iMac as a second monitor is a great way to increase your productivity and make the most of your desktop workspace. Whether you're a professional working on multiple projects at once, or a student who needs extra screen real estate for research and writing, using your iMac as a second monitor can be a game-changer. So if you have an iMac and want to use it as a second monitor, give Duet a try!
